The “Space Series” explores what we know (the visible world) and what we don’t know, (the abstract and the intangible). The intent is to engage the viewer, using some recognizable data, (i.e. the comet in panel 1 of Suite/Moments or the variable little lunar landscapes of Lunacy, or the Milky Way in Inconclusion, etc.) to consider the bigger picture; to entice the viewer into seeing the transformative, the timeless….the intricate entanglement of it all.
Also at work in these paintings is the idea of “openendedness” to address the vastness of being and a search for meaning. Time and Tide on Delta Four, Lunacy and Inconclusion extend conceptually beyond the corner of the room (all of these works include partial sections that meet with the boundary of the room) suggesting that they continue on, to where? to infinity? Suite/Moments, Extropy, (my own term meaning the opposite of “entropy”) and Read-Out on a Sphere are narratives without beginnings or endings, to be read as a comic strip ….across and down.
These methodologies to me are reflective of the human condition, that is, being within process, but without limits. |
